On Tuesday I had the pleasure to be sandwiched between two very sexy lady singers in SL at The Jitterbug Club. Katia Portugal and I have been going back-to back for a while there and she is so sweet to stay on and take part in my set. We have had some incredibly funny times. However, when Thomas told me that he had booked Lisa Brune to sing after me too, I was doing my very own jitterbug in my seat. Lisa and I have worked together many times at Sinner's Burlesque and it is always a thrill.
If you are not familiar with The Jitterbug Club, you have really been missing out on a little treasure (see video below). I loved the place the minute I set eyes on it. Thomas Etzel (owner) has probably the best collection of mesh figures I have seen in anyone place. His band is superb and its always an extra little frisson to get up and sing with them behind you. So Katia was up on stage and in full flow when I got there. She did a superb cover of "One" by U2 and then followed it up with Aerosmiths' "Janie's Got A Gun". Somehow her idea of working everyone's names into the song turned into something about banana guns...don't ask...which then meant she had to sing a banana song and before you know it the club was filled with banana avatars and we were all crying laughing. Thomas even brought out his chimp hat. As if that was not funny enough she then did a version of "Touch Me" by Samamtha Fox using a voice modulator that made her sound like a chipmunk on Helium. By this time I don't think there was a dry seat in the house. KUDOS KATIA! Considering all of this it was a miracle that I had enough breath left to sing given that I had been hysterical for at least half an hour. Larry took on the role of my one-cat Pep Squad and I think I managed to hold it together long enough...well until Lisa arrived and the local chat moved on to underwear. One of these days I will learn not to read local chat! Lisa as always was sublime. I kind of zone out a bit when she is on stage because I am just listening to her voice rather than the songs. She is so expressive, it's almost like listening to an instrument instead of a voice. I did pick out a lovely rendition of a song called "End of our Days" and also a very sensual version of "Wicked Games". When I hear a lot of singers doing that breathy pseudo-sexy voice it kind of leaves me cold, but Lisa has a very visceral and earthy quality to it that works. Plus you can always tell that she is backing it up with genuine emotion, much in the way that Katia fills her songs with her passion for the energy of music. It was a pretty excellent and entertaining 3 hours for me. By the time it was over I was not only tired, but my ribs were aching from laughing. I don't think you can ask more than that. Katia, Lisa and I are at Jitterbug every two weeks on a Tuesday. Next time round (23rd May) Thomas is planning an outdoor event.. Wait! Did I not mention there is a whole outdoor thing too? I'm trying to persuade him that it should be our very own SecondLife Glastonbury...(no mud though!) See you there! Taxi to The Jitterbug Club Watch the video latest offering...it's been a while :)
